PAM and CGS at the EuroDIG 2024 in Vilnius

On 17-19 June 2024, a PAM and CGS delegation participated in the European Dialogue on Internet Governance (EuroDIG) 2024 in Vilnius, Lithuania. The EuroDIG is an open multi-stakeholder platform to exchange views about the Internet and its governance. The event was a unique occasion to foster cooperation among government representatives, members of organizations, and experts. In addition, this year EuroDIG was enriched by an intergenerational dialogue with the Youth EuroDIG Platform, gathering the Youth Department of every member state of the Council of Europe. This kind of multilevel cooperation is an essential tool for elaborating a comprehensive approach to the Internet and new technologies, with implications that will affect both the innovation and regulation of this domain. PAM and CGS are at the forefront of the debate on the Internet and the latest developments in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI), especially concerning the malicious use of this powerful technology.

The participant stakeholders discussed the regulatory frameworks of AI, starting from the European Union’s AI Act, the first regulation on AI by a major regulator anywhere. Afterwards, they analyzed the issues of disinformation and ethical constraints related to the use of Artificial Intelligence, as well as their policy implications. AI is indeed a tool that, despite representing a crucial innovation that is going to positively affect our lives and societies, poses significant challenges.

At the EuroDIG, PAM and CGS underscored that AI might constitute a severe threat if exploited by terrorist and criminal organizations. The aftereffects of malicious use must be taken into account when setting up an effective legal framework to regulate AI. PAM and CGS provided their insights during several meetings of the event, and are eager to enhance collaboration with the EuroDIG Platform to guarantee a safe and controlled advancement towards the future of technology.
