PAM-CGS at the FAO’s World Food Security Committee

23 October 2024, Rome – PAM-CGS participated in the 52nd session of the Committee on World Food Security (CFS), hosted by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Rome, represented by Prof. Massimo Giangaspero, PAM-CGS Senior Expert One Health and by Dr. Giorgia Santini, from the Faculty of Biology of the Federico II University of Naples.

The FAO’s Committee on World Food Security (CFS) was established in 1974 as the leading  international and intergovernmental platform for all stakeholders to work together to ensure food security and nutrition at the global level.

The Committee meets at a time when food insecurity is increasing worldwide mainly due to a significant raise in armed conflicts, as well as to climate change, droughts, and extreme weather events. In its latest assessment, FAO reported that more than seven hundred million people may have faced hunger in 2023.

This year’s session focused on the 2024 State of Food Security and Nutrition report, as well as the update of the CFS Multi-Year Programme of Work for 2024-2027, and on the report by the High-Level Panel of Experts on Food Security and Nutrition (HLPE-FSN) on “Strengthening urban and peri-urban food systems to achieve food security and nutrition in the context of urbanization and rural transformation”.

Looking ahead, PAM-CGS reaffirms its dedication to further cooperating with FAO, and has thus welcomed the 2024 State of Food Security and Nutrition Report and related Recommendations, with the goal of strengthening food legislation among its Member States and in the  Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf regions.

In line with such effort, PAM is currently finalizing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with FAO to strengthen and enrich its already excellent cooperation, aimed at reinforcing further joint initiatives to reinforce regional and global food security and safety, while also advancing food transformation strategies. //
