The Role of Governance in Unleashing the Value of Data

 

(Centre for International Governance Innovation – 12 November 2024) In 2018, the essay series Data Governance in the Digital Age anticipated some of the data governance issues that have emerged, such as surveillance capitalism and the economics of data, but did not cover data valuation in depth. Data is increasingly central to economic activity and how we make sense of the world, but it is still not valued in either national or corporate balance sheets. There is no accepted methodology to measure data’s value — value that depends on its usefulness in a particular context, which is framed by individual or societal perspectives, governance rules and regulations, and input from different stakeholders. Vatican, Microsoft Unveil AI-generated ‘Digital Twin’ of St. Peter’s

Surge in exploits of zero-day vulnerabilities is ‘new normal’ warns Five Eyes alliance

(Alexander Martin – The Record – 12 November 2024) The cybersecurity agencies of the Five Eyes intelligence alliance (the U.S., U.K., Australia, Canada and New Zealand) issued a warning on Tuesday that hackers were increasingly exploiting zero-day vulnerabilities to access their targets’ networks. Dutch company behind Hannaford, Stop & Shop says cyber issue affecting US network

The Dutch company Ahold Delhaize released a statement on Friday warning that it recently discovered a cyberattack within its U.S. network. Delta, Amazon confirm vendor breach as dark web posts revive MOVEit leak concerns

North Korea Hackers Leverage Flutter to Deliver macOS Malware

The security firm said it was the first time it has observed threat actors use the Flutter framework to target macOS. Energy Giant Halliburton Reveals $35m Ransomware Loss

Researchers Demonstrate Controlled Transfer of Atoms Using Coherent Tunneling Between ‘Optical Tweezers’

By adjusting the spacing in a linear array of three optical tweezers, the team controlled the tunneling rate, smoothly transferring atoms between the two outer tweezers with minimal probability of finding them in the center. Quantum Machine Learning Model Improves Blood Flow Imaging for Precision Diagnostics

(Cierra Choucair – Quantum Insider – 12 November 2024) A study from the Beijing University of Technology, Beijing Science and Technology Project Manager Management Corporation Ltd, and the University of Nottingham introduces a hybrid quantum–classical model that integrates variational quantum algorithms with 3D CNNs to improve the accuracy and stability of Laser Speckle Contrast Imaging (LSCI) for blood flow imaging. By replacing traditional pooling layers with variational quantum circuits, the model retains spatial and temporal data, which reduces information loss and improves predictive performance. Initial tests using synthetic tissue models showed that the quantum–classical model outperformed classical methods by up to 26.1% in prediction accuracy.
