As a leading international Think Tank established by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM), the Centre for Global Studies (CGS) is committed to advancing research and providing strategic analysis on major global issues.
A primary area of interest of CGS is Human Health and Food Safety. Leading the research in this field is Prof. Massimo Giangaspero, PAM-CGS Senior Advisor on One Health, whose extensive academic background and expertise in veterinary medicine have long focused on the One Health Approach. This approach underscores the critical interconnection among human, animal, and environmental health, acknowledging that the well-being of humans is intrinsically
linked to the health of animals and the ecosystems they inhabit. The One Health approach is today more critical than ever in addressing food safety, zoonotic diseases, and environmental sustainability.
In line with this approach, Prof. Giangaspero, has recently authored an important article on “Animal Welfare during Transport, E
volution, and Perspectives of European Union Legislation and Policy,” published on the Open Veterinary Journal. This work offers a meticulous examination of the evolution of EU policies on animal welfare during transport. Animal welfare is not just an ethical imperative, but also a public health priority, as poor animal treatment can directly affect food systems, leading to widespread health risks.
The article highlights the pressing necessity of modernizing EU legislation on animal transport, both within Europe and in cross-border trade. By tracing the historical development of these policies and pointing out the areas in which they remain inadequate, the article calls for a rethinking of legislative frameworks to meet contemporary needs. This is particularly relevant as the EU’s Farm to Fork Strategy increasingly focuses on sustainability, making animal welfare an integral component of future food policies.
PAM-CGS’s commitment to addressing Global Health issues extends beyond animal welfare. Its scheduled participation in the Healthcare Future Summit, to be held in Dubai from 29 to 31 October, further reflects its dedication to advancing global health under the One Health framework. At the Summit, PAM-CGS will engage in discussions surrounding vaccination and infectious diseases, recognizing the importance of immunization not only for humans but also for animals as part of a holistic approach to preventing disease outbreaks.
In addition, Professor Giangaspero will also represent CGS and PAM at the forthcoming 52nd Session of the FAO Committee on Food Security (CFS), to be held in Rome next week. On that occasion, Prof. Giangaspero will stress PAM’s concern over the regional and global food security situation, which is exacerbated by current conflicts and tensions, while also reiterating the need to foster food systems’ transformation with more sustainable practices. The Session will also represent an opportunity for PAM representatives to further discuss the details of the MoU that PAM and FAO are currently finalizing.
