25-26 November 2024, Belgrade, Serbia – As a result of the excellent cooperation between the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM) and the UN Internet Governance Forum (IGF), PAM will host a session during the 9th annual meeting of the South Eastern European Dialogue on Internet Governance (SEEDIG), which will be held in Belgrade.
This years’ theme “SEE Potential: Digital Turning Points and Responsible Governance” underscores the importance of South Eastern European countries in shaping inclusive and accountable digital policies for the region’s future.
PAM will host a session on “AI & Emerging Tech: Preventing Misuse and Advancing Regulation”, which will address the urgent need for stronger regulatory frameworks to govern AI and emerging technologies at both national and international levels.
Hon. Abdelouahab Yagoubi (Algeria), PAM Rapporteur on Artificial Intelligence, and Hon. Tijana Davidovac (Serbia) will lead the session to share the Assembly’s insights on the pressing challenges and potential solutions regarding the regulation of AI and innovate technologies.
This discussion will also serve as an opportunity to present the preliminary findings of the report, entitled “AI and Emerging Technologies: Security, Legislation, and Governance”, produced by the PAM Centre for Global Studies (CGS), in partnership with the UN Security Council Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED), and the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT).
In addition, PAM will actively contribute to the 19th UN Internet Governance Forum (IGF) in Riyadh next month, where PAM will co-organize with CTED a high-level Open Forum dedicated to “Combating the Use of ICT for Terrorist Purposes”.
In Riyadh, PAM will address another important session on “Parliamentary Approaches to the Use of Information and Communication Technologies in Counter-Terrorism”, sponsored by UNOCT, and which will focus on the application of UN Security Council Resolution 1373.
PAM-CGS has long been at the forefront of addressing the malicious use of emerging technologies and AI by terrorist and criminal groups, further contributing to the implementation of the Global Digital Compact, annexed to the Pact for the Future, adopted in September 2024 at the UN Summit of the Future.
In 2025, as announced by Ambassador Dr. Abdulsalam AlMadani, PAM’s Roving Ambassador for the GCC and Chairman of CGS, PAM-CGS is considering the possibility of organizing a high-level “Trust Path & Reputation Summit.” The Summit is intended to serve as a platform to assess the progress made in the implementation of the Pact for the Future, with a particular emphasis on fostering trust and advancing multilateral global governance.//
