21 September 2024, UNHQ, New York – The PAM Centre for Global Studies (CGS) assisted and contributed to the organization of the PAM High-Level Side-Event, entitled “Parliamentary Support in Re-Establishing Trust and Reputation in Multilateral Governance”, at the UNHQ in NewYork, on the occasion of the UN Summit of the Future.
The Side-Event, in partnership with the UN Security Council Counter-Terrorism Executive Directorate (CTED), and the Permanent Missions of the Kingdom of Morocco and Italy to the UN in New York, was opened by H. E. Hon. Enaam Mayara, PAM President and President of the House of Councillors of the Kingdom of Morocco, and by H.E. Amb. Dennis Francis, Permanent Representative of Trinidad and Tobago and President of the 78th UNGA.
H.E. Amb. Dr. Abdulsalam AlMadani, CGS Chairman and PAM Roving Ambassador for the GCC, addressed the concluding remarks of the meeting and announced the intention to hold the “Trust Path & Reputation Summit”, tentatively in 2025, which represents a substantive contribution to implementing the goals of the UN Pact for the Future.
H.E. Amb. Dr. AlMadani said that the “Trust Path & Reputation Summit is not only a response to today’s challenges, but also a forward-looking initiative. It offers a chance to rebuild and restore trust in institutions, organizations, and governments worldwide”.
The “Trust Path & Reputation Summit” will address global challenges, such as economic stability, environmental sustainability, and technological advancement, and will promote the identification of common solutions that support good governance and policies to foster transparency, accountability, and trust.
In his opening address, H.E Hon. Enaam Mayara, PAM President and President of House of Councillors of the Kingdom of Morocco, as a result of the excellent cooperation between PAM-CGS and CTED, also announced the establishment of a Permanent Global Parliamentary Observatory on the Malicious Use of AI and Emerging Technologies, to be served by CGS, in San Marino, to support the implementation of a key pillar of the Summit of the Future.
In fact, the CGS is actively addressing the challenges posed by AI through a comprehensive analytical report, being drafted in partnership with CTED, international experts and institutions. This report analyses the malicious use of AI and emerging technologies by terrorist and criminal groups.
The event also featured a keynote address by Ms. Natalia Gherman, AssistantSecretary-General and Executive Director of the Executive Directorate of the United Nations Security Council Counter-Terrorism Committee (CTED), who welcomed the valuable research produced by CGS on the misuse use of new technologies, recognizing its crucial role in shaping effective counter-terrorism strategies.
Leading the discussions were Hon. Deborah Bergamini (Italy), PAM Rapporteur on Political Affairs, H.E. Hon. Mohamed Abou El Enein, Deputy Speaker of the Egyptian Parliament and PAM President Emeritus, Hon. Joana Lima (Portugal), President of the PAM Women Parliamentary Forum (WPF), Hon. Tuba Durgut (Türkiye), Vice-President in-pectore of the PAM WPF, and Prof. Rym Ayadi, Founder and President of the Euro-Mediterranean Economists Association (EMEA), who emphasized shared challenges and opportunities for international cooperation.
CGS will continue promoting multilateral governance frameworks, offering valuable insights to foster international cooperation and address the complex challenges facing the Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf regions, and beyond. //
