The International Day of Parliamentarism

In 2018, through Resolution A/RES/72/278, the UN General Assembly officially established the International Day of Parliamentarism on the 30 of June. The day celebrates the importance of Parliamentary Diplomacy and its achievements and is a time to check the progress of parliaments worldwide. Parliamentarians are not only the foundation of representation and democracy but also guarantee the accountability of their respective governments.

PAM and CGS are intensely committed to fostering Parliamentarian Diplomacy through the mission and values of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU). In March 2024, a PAM and CGS delegation attended the 148th IPU Assembly in Geneva. The delegates shared concerns about the dramatic situation in the MENA area and emphasized that parliaments must be at the forefront of the significant security issues of our times, ranging from terrorism to environmental degradation.

Parliamentary Diplomacy is currently under threat from the upsurge of populist and nationalist movements, as well as a growing distrust towards the fundamental democratic mechanisms and institutions. The misuse of new technologies and AI further complicates the situation, as these powerful tools can manipulate electoral procedures and disseminate false or misleading information. PAM and CGS are actively involved in addressing these challenges through comprehensive research and policy recommendations. This commitment is focused on promoting institutional transparency and bolstering institutional resilience, in collaboration with the IPU and other parliamentary forums. The restoration of trust in Parliamentary Diplomacy is a top priority, necessitating a thorough examination of a wide range of interconnected multisectoral issues.
