A high-level delegation of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean and the Center for Global Studies met with H.E. António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations.

The delegation led by Hon. Pedro Roque (Portugal), PAM Vice-President, included H.E. Hon. Mohammed Abou El Enein, Vice-President of the Egyptian Parliament and PAM President Emeritus; Hon. Giulio Centemero (Italy), PAM Vice-President; H.E. Amb. Dr. Abdulsalam AlMadani (UAE), PAM Roving Ambassador for the GCC and Chairman of the PAM/CGS; CGS team; Amb. Hon. Majallie Whbee (Israel), PAM Roving Ambassador; Amb. Qazi Shaukat Fareed, PAM Permanent Observer to the UN in New York, and PAM Secretary General.

The meeting addressed, among others, the catastrophic humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the need for the immediate release of the Israeli hostages. A comprehensive regional political initiative is urgent to protect civilians and guarantee a two-state solution in mutual security. The PAM/CGS delegation expressed concern about the ongoing Russian aggression against Ukraine and renewed its commitment to the reconciliation efforts in Libya.

The meeting also strengthened cooperation between PAM, CGS, and UN agencies on threats posed by the malicious use of Artificial Intelligence. In collaboration with the UN, CGS is producing a comprehensive report that will be presented at the United Nations General Assembly in New York in September and at the IGF in Riyadh in December. In addition, CGS and PAM have enthusiastically welcomed the proposal to join the community of experts preparing for the Future Summit.

CGS Chairman Ambassador Abdulsalam Al Madani recalled that these issues will also be addressed in the 20th DIHAD Conference, held in Dubai from 23 to 25 April 2024. Ambassador Al Madani presented Secretary-General Guterres with a recognition plaque for participating in the first DIHAD Conference twenty years ago. Guterres recognized the CGS’s role as a special Think Tank that provides analytical tools to address global challenges.

CGS remains persistent in cooperating with the UN to foster sustainable solutions for peace and security.
