PAM-CGS to contribute to the 19th Annual Meeting of the UN Internet Governance Forum

 

12 December 2024, San Marino – The Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM) and its Centre for Global Studies (CGS) will contribute to the 19th Annual Meeting of the UN IGF, which will be held from 15 to 19 December 2024, hosted by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia,  in Riyadh, under the theme: “Building our Multistakeholder Digital Future”.

Established in 2006, on the occasion of the UN World Summit on the Information Society, the IGF serves as a leading platform designed to facilitate and advance inclusive and multi- stakeholder dialogue on Internet governance.

PAM will be represented by a High-Level Delegation led by Hon. Pedro Roque, PAM Vice- President, which will include H.E. Dr. Jehad Alfadhel (Bahrain), Second Deputy Chairman of the Consultative Assembly; Hon. Joana Lima (Portugal), President of the PAM Women Parliamentary Forum (WPF); Hon. Abdelouahab Yagoubi (Algeria), PAM Rapporteur on Artificial Intelligence, as well as senior staff of parliament and the PAM Secretariat.

The 19th Annual Meeting of the IGF will be a critical occasion to present the findings and conclusions of the recently published PAM-CGS report on “The malicious use of AI and emerging technologies by terrorist and criminal groups: impact on security, legislation, and governance” produced in partnership with the UN Security Council Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED) and UN Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT).

In this regard, PAM, assisted by CGS, will co-promote two Side Events: 1) A High-Level Open Forum dedicated to “Combating the use of ICT for terrorist purposes”, in collaboration with the UN Security Council Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED), UNODC, the Global Internet Forum on Counter Terrorism, and Tech Against Terrorism; 2) A Session on “Parliamentary approaches to the use of information and communication technologies in Counter-Terrorism in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 1373”, in collaboration with the UN Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT), OSCE PA and the Shura Council of Qatar.

PAM-CGS looks forward to its active engagement in the 19th IGF, building on the previous contributions to the regional IGF in Vilnius and Belgrade.//
